Black Authors and Readers Rock (BARR)

Since its inception, the Black Authors and Readers Rock (BARR) Conference has accomplished its stated mission of bringing together authors and readers “in a celebration of the written word.”

“Though BARR’s focus is on authors of color, because they are traditionally underserved by the publishing industry, the conference is open to everyone.”

During the 2016 Prince George’s County Book Festival at the Wayne Curry Sports & Learning Center it was my great pleasure and privilege to spend time as an event volunteer with Mrs. Sharon Lucas, BARR founder, literary event planner, book club consultant, published author (Plan It! The Complete Resource Guide…) and D.C./Md./Va.-area legend in the bookish universe.

This inspiring visionary leads by example and mentors others. Lessons learned from attending one of her Plan It! workshops a few years ago definitely helped Heather Brooks and me to design an effective strategy for launching The Write Women Book Fest in 2019. Sharon was generous enough to make a brief appearance during our inaugural event despite her own hectic schedule with BARR the following weekend. We were grateful then, and remain inspired by her example.

Circumstances have suspended BARR until 2022, but its mission of celebrating the written word is a year-round priority.

As a small gesture of appreciation to Sharon for all she and BARR have contributed to Prince George’s County, the state of Maryland, the publishing industry, and The Culture, TWWBF has invited Sharon to speak about the Black Authors and Readers Rock Conference.
